After attending Thursday’s seminar, I’m more convinced than ever that hearing loss of any kind is a major contributor to dementia. Dr. Darrow is a NeuroScientist who has extensively studied the connection between the two. If there is ANY form of available treatment for Tinnitus/and or hearing loss, it’s worth having comprehensive testing to determine the exact nature & degree, & seriously take a look at newer treatment options. New technology is emerging in this field as well as Neuro research – a missing component until the past few years. Independent studies have confirmed it’s the #1 leading cause of dementia. I have had tinnitus since 1981, so I understand the aggravation, constant distraction & difficulty it makes in my quality of life. However, with known 40% underlying hearing loss, I’m hopeful for a positive result through testing & treatment. I’m more fearful of NOT doing something, with a history of Alz on both sides of the family.

On June 23, 2017, I purchased a pair of Oticon OPN 1 MINI RITE hearing aids with 100 speakers fitted with power dome ear pieces. These rubber domes took some practice inserting into the ear since they are tight but very secure and provide the best sound/volume when inserted properly. In addition, they won’t fall out possibly losing my hearing aids.
My current hearing aids were only 2 years old and working okay but my hearing in crowds, movies, restaurants in the car and other background noises was poor.
After a trial period the new Oticon hearing aids provided to be far superior to filtering out background noise and voice came through with much more clarity.
It was a difficult decision to replace my 2 year old state of the art costly Phonak hearing aids. However, the performance improvement of the Oticon hearing aids was well worth the expense.
I also purchased the 3.0 TV adapter which works great ! I can listen with excellent stereo fidelity at a comfortable volume level independent of others around me.
Thanks from Charlie of Holden MA*

Pleasant and relaxing environment. No pressure. Great new hearing experience.*

I heard Dr. Darrow talk about hearing aids on our local radio station. He had great news about new hearing aid technology. He was offering a hearing test and a free trial period using the new Oticon hearing aids. I took him up on his offer. I wasn’t disappointed. There was a dramatic difference in the old hearing aids from the Veterans Administration, and the new ones from Dr. Darrow. I was sold on their product. Dr. Darrow and his office staff are true professionals on treating hearing loss.*

Very pleasant staff, timely appointment, very thorough hearing testing, clean and modern facility. They took the time to answer all my questions. I would rated them 5 stars if not for the cost of the hearing aid offered to me which was way above my expectation of value and justification for my needs.*

I only wish I had visited Hearing and Balance and Dr. Darrow years ago. My first visit yesterday was unlike visiting audiologists in the old days. New tests, visual real time displays of ear performance, explanations of the interdependence of hearing and brain function. Kim, the audiology fellow, was extremely pleasant and patient, as well as informative. Finally, I got the newest iteration of miniaturized, noise-cancelling Oticon hearing aids (my first ever), and they are an easy fit and unobtrusive. I hardly know I have them on. Bonus: they’re iPhone enabled and they stream bluetooth (if you fellow geezers like) right through your hearing aids, which is very cool. Most of all, they are natural sounding, not like your parents’ clunky hearing aids. For me, they don’t make everything louder; they just make sounds clearer and more understandable. I am already comfortable with them, and in subsequent visits Dr. Darrow will tweak them to be even more attuned to my requirements. Baby steps, I understand, but they already are a huge improvement.*

My experience with Hearing and Balance has been relatively short; I formerly worked closely with Audiologic Hearing Services, which was bought by Hearing and Balance back in May 2015. However, since I adored and trusted Dr. Clare Williams, and she spoke SO highly of this audiology provider, I anticipate great service and treatment. So far, so good! Very responsive, willing to explain things, and supportive of my experimentation with a new hearing aid mold — some things take getting used to. 🙂 All in all, a positive experience to date.*
– Tricia N.
Very helpful and considerate of my husbands hearing loss. The Doctors and Elaine are professional and friendly making our visits enjoyable. Thank you.*
– Maureen B.
Professional and fantastic. Great staff and very accommodating. I have had severe hearing loss for 40 years and have used hearing aids from most of the other local providers and this one is the best. I now hear better with my state-of-the-art hearing aids thanks to Doctor Burns. I now hear the fizz of soda in a glass, the birds and my wife. Give Hearing and Balance Centers of New England a call and you can stop saying what, say that again and ha and start hearing all that you have been missing.*
– Tom D.
Excellent practitioners. Knowledgeable provider who are on top of their field. I appreciated their professional manner and speed, and everyone seems like they knew what they were doing.
I drive rather far to see them and it is well worth it.
I feel well cared for and valued as a person.
Highly, highly recommend.*

This has been the only hearing center that has actually helped me improve my hearing loss. The staff has always been friendly and caring.*
– Lois B.
Very happy with Hearing and Balance Centers of New England. Top notch professional people to deal with in all regards. I had Siemens hearing aids for nine years , but never could hear very well. I was always trying to read lips. Now with new Oticons hearing aids, I am able to communicate again. A life changing experience!*
– Frederic D.
My father went to get his hearing checked at the Hearing and Balance Centers of New England. We knew he needed hearing aids, but he resisted for years. He’s been wearing them for months now and it makes such a big difference for him and his family! He admittedly feels less isolated because he can now hear things that he didn’t realize he was missing, like conversations in crowded restaurants and sarcastic comments uttered under the breath of his family members. The people at the Hearing and Balance Centers of New England are friendly, knowledgeable and understanding. I recommend them to anyone who thinks they have a hearing issue, and those who don’t believe that they do (like my Dad)!*

I was reluctant to go for hearing aids. My experience has been a great one.. Dr. Corley is very professional and caring. I would recommend Hearing and Balance Center of NE to anyone in need of hearing aids.*
– Paula S.
The Hearing and Balance Center is the place you want to go if you are looking for down-to-earth, knowledgeable, and flexible audiologists. My daughter wears two hearing aids and we are very pleased with the personalized care that she receives. The extended hours that they offer are hard to find elsewhere and really a big plus with balancing work and your children’s schedules. Christine Corley is the audiologist that my daughter sees and she always goes above and beyond to make sure that we have everything that we need and to make sure that the hearing aids are working as they should be. I would recommend The Hearing and Balance Centers to anyone who is looking for individualized care for all of their hearing needs.*
– Jacqueline B.
Dr. Darrow is amazing person with expertise and empathy. His ability to restore hearing while keeping the individual’s preferences in mind is unprecedented in our industry. I would highly recommend my esteemed colleague, and his clinics, as the provider of choice in New England for patients seeking improved hearing.*
– Jared B.
Unbelievable service! Friendly, personal, flexible, thoughtful…..if there were more adjectives, I would use them. I would come back here anytime. The people here are like family. They went above and beyond to get me my hearing aids–after some red tape–and then moved the earth to get me the best hearing aids. They are wonderful! *
– Diane P.
I found the center online and Dr. Darrow was very responsive by email. I’ve had tinnitus for ten years, and although my hearing loss was documented as mild to moderate- no one had suggested hearing aids with maskers to help the situation. Dr. Corley worked diligently with me on trying a couple of brands with maskers built in. I’m new to it but I think it is making a difference. I have have had vertigo/balance issues in the past which is calmed down at the moment– and I hope to get a little more advice before I go back overseas where I live.*
– Roberta P.
I’ve always had a great experience with the staff.*
– John D.
I have had ringing in my ears for many years, and my occupation has exacerbated the hearing loss. I did not realize how much I was missing regarding quality of life-until I met Dr. Corley.
From the very first appointment I felt very comfortable with her and her expertise. She patiently lead me through a trial of many hearing aids and adjustments, until we settled into a place where the result was maximized.
I have regained so much from being able to hear again, and want to thank Dr. Corley and her very professional and accommodating staff for allowing me this wonderful experience.
I highly recommend Dr. Corley and the Hearing and Balance Centers of New England to anyone who has suffered hearing loss.*

Several times I had heard Dr. Darrow speaking on WTAG radio and was intrigued about medical findings he discussed related to the brain and hearing loss. My mom has been living with untreated hearing loss for years, much to the frustration of our family, and I wanted to learn more to possibly prevent long term side effects.
I had never had an official evaluation of my hearing, and was overdue for the recommended 50 year baseline. I knew I was somewhat struggling to hear in certain situations. I have allergies and thought maybe I had fluid in my ears. It was becoming more difficult for me to understand what children in my classroom were saying, especially with the constant hum of the ventilation system. I could hardly follow conversation in a restaurant. I relied on closed captioning while watching TV.
During the evaluation, I realized just how much I had been relying upon facial clues of a speaker, closed captioning, and context clues to complete my understanding of spoken messages. The same day that my hearing was assessed, I left with hearing aids that Dr. Corley computer customized to my loss. I had been “missing” so much more than I realized. On subsequent visits, we (it is a mutual collaboration) fine-tuned my devices to my hearing preferences. My husband’s voice was even sampled since I was having trouble following his conversation when I wasn’t seeing his face. Now I can understand him much better, even when he’s in an adjacent room. If I use the phone speaker option, it is by choice, not necessity. I can follow dialog in performances and on TV without having to ask for clarification. I am delighting in the sounds of rustling leaves and the songs of birds. I am very glad that I purchased my Oticon system, even though my insurance did not cover the cost. The daily and long term preventative benefits are well worth the investment. I am worth it!
P.S. Mom was so impressed with my Oticons (which she never noticed in my ears until I told her), she finally went for an evaluation, and has since purchased her own hearing aids. It is never too late to improve the quality of one’s life.*

I am a retired Chief of Police, and have been wearing hearing aids for over 16 years. The new hearing aids I received from this place was a life changing event. For the first time in YEARS I have been able to drive my car and listen to the radio, even with the window open. After 16 years of going to the same audiologist I said I am not getting anywhere, so I made and appointment with the Mass. Eye and Ear in Boston. They said that I have severe hearing loss. I brought my hearing test results back to my audiologist and she said, they don’t know what they are talking about. With that I said these people are the best in the world–good bye. I heard and ad for Hearing and Balance Center in Worcester MA, and thought, heck I will give them a shot. Went there had a hearing test and the results were almost exact with Ma. eye & ear. They fitted me with Oticon Alta 2 mini Rite. I almost started to cry, I COULD HEAR!!!!!
The people I work with were great, I can not say enough good things about them, the hearing aids or the service, now I can hear, birds, rain falling, my wife, (well sometimes I shut them off LOL) no longer have to use the CC setting on my TV, I don’t know how Oticon did it but the eliminated about 98% of the back round noise. If your hearing aids are older the 4 years PLEASE GO SEE THESE PEOPLE.
